Primary qualification in South Africa and subsequently worked in a number of countries including project set-up in the Former Soviet Union. Completed specialist training in Internal Medicine and Intensive Care in London, Oxford and Cambridge.
Interests include collaboration with colleagues who work in resource restricted environments. This includes acting as WHO faculty on courses, mainly in Central Asia, on the management of critically ill patients, especially in the context of influenza, contributing to learning resources and actively participating in working groups and remote support. Research interests include brain dysfunction in critical illness, psychological and other long term outcomes. Educational activities include e-learning as chairperson for the ESICM e-Learning committee and membership of associated ESICM Division of Professional Development committees and ESICM Council.
